Problem opening Safari

I can open Safari but cannot open any web pages. It stopped working after I download a third party software Genieo. I think it might be some incompatibility with a plug-in but i cannot work out exactly what.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Genieo is adware that many anti-virus programs will identify as a "potentially unwanted application," or even as malware in some cases. You need to get rid of it. Follow the instructions here:

After you have done that, it would be worthwhile to run through the rest of the Adware Removal Guide to make sure you don't have any other adware programs installed.

Thank you for the advice and instructions, I managed to delete the genieo files. Now Safari opens as normal however I cannot do much with it as all the options are all greyed out. I have also re-loaded OS Mavericks in an attempt to get Safari re-loaded. I am able to use Firefox in the usual manner. Appreciate some further guidance. Thank you
