The ipad has been on charge for over 24 hours and will not respond to any start up options and WILL NOT start up in recovery mode and as the ipad does not turn on ituens does not recognise the device to do a restore through itunes. The ipad is not in warenty and is over 4 years since we brought it and has no warenty.
what can I do to fix this problem the operating system is the most up to date for the ipad 2

You said that the device will not respond to any start up options and since nobody here knows what start up options you tried, have you tried a reset?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If you still can't get the device to be recognized in iTunes and nothing else will work your next option would be a trip to an Apple Syore or an authorized service provider and see their help.
