My iPhone 3GS stuck in Recovery Mode

I tried to update my iPhone from software 5.1.1 to 6.1.1 but it wouldn't let me. It said it couldn't and that the update failed. I then tried to access my iPhone but couldn't because I was told by my iTunes to put it in Recovery Mode. I did this and it said it was finished but then it still continued to say put it in recovery mode. I've put it in recovery mode again and now my iPhone is starting up again. What will be deleted from my phone? Will I still have my contacts, my texts, my photos, my notes and my apps? It has started my iPhone again but is not recognising my sim card. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!
