sign out of icloud - does it delete everything?

When you open you contacts

• Look for duplicates: Choose Card > Look for Duplicates.
• Merge duplicate cards that are found: Select the cards you want to merge, then choose Card > Merge Selected Cards.

When you use several accounts in Contacts, you may end up with several cards for a contact—for example, one card from LinkedIn and one from Google. You can link the contact’s cards to streamline your list of contacts without merging the cards.

If you choose delete at all of the prompts it will delete the iCloud data from your Mac, but not from iCloud. If you are only modifying your existing ID, your data will download back to your Mac when you sign back in with the revised ID.

This article explains how to do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4910, but you don't need to worry. Signing out and choosing delete only disconnects your Mac from your data on the iCloud server. Signing back in reconnects it and the data will download back again.

Does anyone know, if you select "no" when it asks you if you want to delete contacts from the device, will it create duplicates when you sign back in? I remember back in the MobileMe days if you chose to keep a local copy and then signed back into MobileMe it would duplicate all of your contacts and have a group called "local" and one called "MobileMe" or something similar...

Edit: or does it give you the option to "Merge" the data?

It should be.

If you "sign out", iCloud will prompt to remove some types of data from the device begin signed out of.

When you sign back in, the dat will be synced once again with iCloud. This may take time depending on what content, how much cotnent, your wifi speed and a number of other factors.

It may not be "there" in an instant.
