Q: Mac Mini Server not seeming to connect with local computers

Anyone have a problem with Mac Mini Server? I had a Mac Mini Server set up with my network but I am only able to sporadically access files on the server from a local computer via Spotlight search.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Hi, what is happening when it doesn't work?

Can you negotiate there in the Finder?

Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

    Hi thank you for responding,

I use digital files, so everything is scanned into the server. The idea is that each of the local computers can either search for a document to use as a template and that we can search for a digital file using finder in order to pull it up and view it for information thats needed throughout the course of a day. The files that are on the server are often not showing up even when I know the exact folder where they are stored. When I go to the server they show right up. I am able to connect to the server I can see folders but many files just simply don't show up.

On another note now I'm having a problem with saving Pages documents from the local computer onto the server. I keep getting a message saying that it's not possible to save a file yet when I go to the server I don't have the same problem so obviously something is not right with my server.

    Might try this...

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)

Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

    If it does contain data...

    Alternatives to Spotlight...

    Find Any File...

Hold Option or alt key when selecting Find to Find All.

P.S. I spent two hours yesterday with Apple Support and Enterprise. Interesting to note that there is a problem with Apple Server software right now that's causing part of the problem I am having. Right now it doesn't allow me to save from the client/local computer to the server. They said they are aware of the issue and are working on it right now. It will explain the problem with documents and they said it may also be causing some other problems with indexing.

Do you think if I add one of these programs that they could complicate matters or not have any negative effect? Do I download these to each of the client/local computers and the server?

    Thank you,

I don't see how they'd cause any problem, just dependong on Apple's problem they may not work either, but they are self contained & easy to delete just the Apps if they don't work.

You need them on all Macs you want to search from.

Still waiting on the fix to the server software. I did download Find Any File and Easy Find. They work pretty good but it's funny they come up with different results sometimes. Thanks again

OK, good luck, only idea on the different results is like in Easyfind you seperate 2 words with a space, it searches for files containing either in the name.
