Problem with en0 on Mac Mini (mid 2011)

Hi all!

I have a strange issue with the network (en0) on my Mac Mini: it just stops working after a seemingly random amount of time.

I found this line in the system log (repeated hundreds of times):

Mar 30 20:52:20 Kandinsky kernel[0]: AppleBCM5701Ethernet [en0]: 1 4 timeoutOccurred - logic error in eed/low-power cycling. fReady, fSleepState

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this? Maybe a hardware issue?

Thanks for your insights!

Mac mini (Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Hi Dirk, some things to try...

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

(SMC reset= Shut down, disconnect power cord for 10 seconds, reconnect power cord, wait 5 more seconds, turn computer back on)

but it is slightly different: (PMU REST = Shut computer down, disconnect power cord for 10+ seconds, reconnect power cord WHILE SIMULTANEOOUSLY PRESSING POWER BUTTON, let off power button for a few seconds, then press power button again to restart the mac mini.)

See if it's related to this...

It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x

The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

"Why 2012 iMac/2012 Mac Mini won't Wake After Hours of Sleep (Hibernates/Powers Off)")

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

A note on that here - http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/Chameleon_SSD_Optimizer.html

About iMac sleep...

Try this: "sudo pmset autopoweroff 0" and "sudo pmset standby 0"

Two users reported that the opposite worked...

Try this: "sudo pmset autopoweroff 1" and "sudo pmset standby 1"

Hi BDAqua,

resetting the PRAM (3 in a row) got rid of the message I mentioned in my previous message but it hasen't solved the problem completely. I still loose the network connection.

I did notice these messages which I didn't get earlier. They repeat quite often.

01/04/14 20:48:23,884 AppleFileServer[296]: _Assert: /SourceCache/afpserver/afpserver-644.90.3/afpserver/FPCarbonVol.cpp, 71 (-35)

The message above repeats every few seconds.

01/04/14 20:47:06,673 com.apple.preference.network.remoteservice[413]: assertion failed: 13C64: liblaunch.dylib + 25164 [38D1AB2C-A476-385F-8EA8-7AB604CA1F89]: 0x25

01/04/14 20:47:06,780 com.apple.preference.network.remoteservice[413]: Bogus event received by listener connection:

<error: 0x7fff75e14b50> { count = 1, contents =

"XPCErrorDescription" => <string: 0x7fff75e14e60> { length = 18, contents = "Connection invalid" }

}

I'll try resetting the SMC next.

Thanks for the help!

The more I dig into the system messages (and Google their meaning 🙂) the more errors pop up. I'm going to do a clean system install and if that doesn't help an erase and install.

After all, this Mac Mini has been up for a year without problems. Guess it's time for a good overhaul springcleaning maintenance.

Thanks for your time and help!
