Burn backup files to a DVD-RW

I want to use a DVD-RW to backup my Quicken Essentials backup files. Initial burn was successful, however, subsequent attempts are not allowed as I get a message that I need a BLANK DISC. I have tried to use a BURN FOLDER and drag new files to the DVD but the system still want a BLANK DISC to perform subsequent backup files. I have a iMac Intel running OS X 10.9.2 (MAVERICKS). Thank you.

In order to do what you want you must setup the DVD-RW as appendable:

Disk Utility 12.x- Record on a recordable CD more than once

OS X Mountain Lion- Burn a CD or DVD

I strongly recommend that you not use CD media for archival purposes unless you buy archival media. Typical CDR media use organic dyes that begin to degrade before they are even used. Archival quality media use special stable dyes that make them more stable. I've seen claims of between 50 and 300 years of shelf life. Your standard inexpensive media can degrade to unreadbale (or even unburnable) in under 2 years.

Yes, they do. I have no problem with your advice except that you specified only CD media instead of either including DVD media or limiting the remark to DVD media.

Archival quality media is definitely preferred for storage times of more than 5 years using DVD media. It would certainly be helpful if you would provide the OP with examples of archival quality media. They are usually more expensive than consumer media and not as easily found, as I understand.

Kappy's right - I mistyped when I said CD media. Taiyo Yuden reportedly makes the best archival media. My last purchase was from Amazon but I didn't see the archival quality media when I looked just now. (Might be there, but it didn't jump out at me.) I did find it here. Verbatim archival gold also has a good reputation and I did find that at Amazon. The price is much higher but for important data like photos and home video I think it is worth it.

Kappy...Try as I might I am unable to make this work with your procedure. Please note that I am running OS 10.9.2 (Maverick). First issue is that I cannot see anyway to make the DISC "appendable" as no check box or arrow appears to perform this. I have DISK UTILITY Version 13. I am still unable to subsequently write to this disc once it has been written to. I keep gettting the message to INSERT A BLANK DISC.

I have looked into various discussions on this subject, specifically those running MAVERICKS and the news was not good. Bottom line as I read was that this OS has not been good for a burn operation.

Well, I never use CD or DVD media for storage so I haven't tried this using Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion, I'm afraid.

Perhaps the option is not available on R/W media, but only on DVD-R media. The former you can just erase then re-add old material plus new material. Perhaps a DVD-RW can be initially configured to be a sparsebundle. I'm afraid I don't really have a definitive answer for you.
