There is now a new product: QuickBooks for Mac 2014.
no reason to spend more money if the old one will work.....

so if i wanted to upgrade my quickbooks 2009 to 2014 can i just bye an online upgrade or do i need to bye the whole 2014 program?
QB 2009 will likely run, but it may not operate correctly.
There really are no upgrades for QB. Any copy you buy is a full version. In other words, there's no such thing as a cheaper version for already owning a previous copy of QB.
Once you purchase and run a newer version, it will update your database for the new version (it will automatically create a backup with the old version's name tacked on). From then on, that converted database and all new entries can only be used in the new version. You can't backtrack to the older version of QB.
