a 2008 MacBook can not run Mavericks unless it is the aluminum version. If he has the plastic one, 10.7.5 is the highest.

First off, there is no 10.6.9. There is 10.6.8.
Secondly, before upgrading past 10.6.8, you have to check for application compatibility:

The 2008 White and Black MacBooks won't upgrade past 10.7.5, but the silvery one will.
The MacBook 5,2 and 6,1 and 7,1 white MacBooks also update to Mavericks according to their model identifier found in the System Profiler.
How much RAM does your son have? If only 2GB, Mavericks may not run well. That was my experience.
Given all the problems so many are having with Mavericks, I'd hold off on installing it until a later version, unless you have a specific and urgent reason to do so now.
