Your email is almost certainly not being compromised on your computer. Nothing yoou do on your Mac is going to prevent these intrusions. Look rather at your mail service provider.
The first thing to do when this happens is to change your email password. This is the password you used when you set up your mail account - not the user password you have to access your computer.

It is extremely unlikely that this is due to any kind of malware.
* Be sure to choose a strong password, more than 10 characters long and containing a mix of upper and lowercase characters, numbers and punctuation.
* Pay attention to any security questions used by your account. Treat those just like a password... make them nonsensical, and don't use dictionary words. Make sure to keep track of the answers for your security questions.
* Check your account for any potential "back doors." GMail accounts, for example, have a "delegation" feature that allows you to grant access to someone else. Changing your password won't keep out a "delegated" person. You'll need to check with your e-mail provider about this kind of thing.
* Be sure not to use your e-mail on an insecure wifi network (ie, one that requires no password to join).
I don't want to take anything away from what has been said, since it's all more important than what I will add, but I'd like to try and give you a direct answer to your question about accessing virus scan.
Rumor has it that Apple does not want their security scheme to be considered to be anti-virus, but it does have a number of system that will protect you from malware. There is no need to do anything to benefit from these as long as you don't choose to disable or ignore them, they all happen automatically in the background to alert you to any malware issues that it detects.
Most important to understand is Apple's Quarantine system. As long as you use Apple applications (and a few third party apps) to obtain files and don't disable either the Safe Downloads List updates or the GateKeeper system, chances are good that any malware will be found and will either be prevented from running or warn you of a potentially dangerous situation.
There is also a Malware Removal Tool (MRT) that will run once with each OS X Security update that you install. It's designed to remove all commonly found OS X malware that might have previously been installed and not yet detected.
Lastly, there is a feature in Safari (and several other browsers) that monitors your browsing habits and will alert you before visiting any site that Google's Safe Browsing system has recorded as dangerous. Make sure that option is enabled in Safari Preference->Security->Fraudulent sites:.
