No one here will be able to tell you, only Apple knows, when the D4s will be supported. Apple does not release this information in advance.

But even, when the raw support for your new camera will have been released, it will probably only be available for you, if you upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and at least Aperture 3.4.5. The most recent Digital Camera Raw Support releases have all been released for these versions only and require an Intel mac: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1734

Nikon D4, but not D4s, the newest camera.

I wish, I had the camera - raw support or not!

The D4S has 30% more computer power than the D4 to allow more noise reduction faster to add a foolish setting of ISO 409,600 (up from 204,800 in the D4), and enough other small tweaks to give 11 frames per second with full autofocus and metering for each frame, up from 10 fps in the D4.

Someone should tell Nikon that adding an s to a model number is not a good idea.

I walked into the same trap two weeks ago 😝

Do you want a bunch of D4s or maybe just one D4s? 👿

Either one would be fine with me. But the name is a clever move - if someone tries to order a new D4s, send a couple of D4s, until the old stock has been cleared 👿

Thanks to all who replied. I posted my question on behalf of a client in a hurry so didn't pay attention to my out of date profile details/machine specs.

Apple have removed my posts before and they may do it again, I don't care. They like to appear as the big powerful billion dollar powerhouse but then cry like teenage girls when someone dares to make objective criticism.

I am irked because my client has the latest iMac running updated Mavericks and she has paid for 'professional' Apple photo imaging software, Aperture (also fully updated including the most recent RAW update).

She has forked out £5K for the Nikon D4s (which has been pointed out has RAW support from Adobe) but she uses Aperture which doesn't. So a £5k camera is sitting idle because Apple don't support it.

Is this right? You tell me.

I am sure, Apple is working on the raw support for a new flagship professional Nikon camera. They can only start to work on the raw support, after the camera has been released, so it usually takes a few months, i.e., when the camera differs considerably from the predecessor.

Your client has several options, while waiting:

  • Shoot raw&jpeg and use the jpegs as original files, until the raw support will be available; later she can switch to the raw originals.
  • Use the software that came with the camera to develope the raw and convert them to another lossless format, e.g.TIFF.
  • Work with Nikon's software for the time being.

Apple today does provide new-camera support less slowly than it has in the past. Still much slower than ideal IMO, but it has improved over the years. I would wager that Apple support will come relatively much more quickly for the D4s than it did for my D3 when it came out.

Note that Nikon's image data is proprietary. After observing Nikon for decades as a user I will guess that Nikon is not easy for Apple to deal with. Nikon business moves often make no sense; the term enigmatic comes to mind when one thinks of corporate Nikon.

Yes it is. If Apple wants us to believe this is a "Professional" application, then the company should make more effort to give us prompt RAW support for a professional camera. Having used Aperture for a long time, it is frustrating to be forced to learn LR. I suppose that once I feel competent with LR there will be little incentive to return to Aperture as Adobe keeps updating LR while Apple is clearly neglecting Aperture. Working with huge TIFF files and cluttering up memory cards is frustrating. It shouldn't have to be this way.
