iPhoto slow

Terribly slow, spinning wheel, everytime I open iPhoto.

We have over 8,000 photos in iPhoto, but it was handled easily on previous operating system. What's up with Mav that it makes this so horrible?

Any suggestions?

You may have incompatible software and software that is not up to date. Yo may have other software that impacts OS X performance like antivirus software and hard drive "cleaning" style apps that pretty much do the opposite of what they claim to do.

It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.

If you wish, Please download, install and run Etrecheck.

Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.

Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.

This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.

Thank You.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Thank you for the suggestion and help.

I opened iTunes and the ball started spinning. Here's from the Console. I'm not sure what's useful.

A lot more like this:

Does that help you see something? I'm not sure what to paste from the ETRE Check....

I'm not interested in "etrecheck" output.

Please quit iPhoto, then move the iPhoto library from the Pictures folder (or wherever you may have put it) to the Desktop. Relaunch iPhoto. It will prompt you to create a new library. Import a few images and test. Then quit again and put the library back where it was, overwriting the one you just created. Post the results.

Thank you. I made a new library and imported 5 photos, then brought the old library back over.

It seems faster but the ball does spin a bit, not as much, in this first test.

Anything else you suggest?

Here's one log entry. I could paste others.

These are your options:

1. Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.

2. Repair or rebuild the library.

3. Scavenge the library with a third-party application called "iPhoto Library Manager," which you can find in a web search. From the application's menu bar (not the iPhoto menu bar), select

Library Rebuild

Books, calendars, and slideshows won't be preserved.
