Q: Windows Bootcamp Partition Fails to boot

Hi,

I woke up this morning and I was unable to boot in Windows 8. The only thing that I can think of that caused this issue was installing Paragon NTFS the previous night to write to NTFS but cant be sure it was the cause of the problem. When holding down alt key on startup and selecting Windows 8 as the partition to boot it fails to load windows 8 and instead displays a message read error unable to boot press control alt + delete in white on a black screen. I am able to boot into my Mavericks partition and tried using Disk Utility to verify and to repair the volume but recieved these messages:

Verifying volume “Untitled”Checking file systemChecking Volume /dev/disk0s4...

Errors were found but not fixed 'cause read-only.

After clicking Disk Repair I received this message:

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

I'm unable to solve this issue and have various important documents that I cant lose. If anyone is able to help me with a fix or a workaround to retrieve the files before formatting the partition, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I have the same problem, (or had)

To fix it, install the Paragon NTFS trial. You'll need it for less than 10 days, so you'll be fine.

After restarting after the install, run

    diskutil list

There should be a drive named "WINDOWS" or "BOOTCAMP". It is formatted as NTFS.

    /sbin/fsck_ufsd_NTFS -n /dev/[disk]

My disk is Microsoft Basic Data, which probably wrong.

    [disk] is /dev/disk0s4.

The s4 part is the fourth partition of disk0. That would be disk0s4

After you've run it, the output should be something like this:

    Password:

    Checking Volume /dev/rdisk0s4...

Type of the filesystem is NTFS.

    NTFS journal is not empty.

Journal is not replayed 'cause read-only.

    Volume label is: WINDOWS.

    Volume is marked as dirty.

    etc...

    Now, run

    /sbin/fsck_ufsd_NTFS -y /dev/r[disk]

    eg. /sbin/fsck_ufsd_NTFS -y /dev/rdisk0s4

If it works, please post it here! If it doesn't work, please post the terminal output.
