The dreaded "imap.gmail.com" is not responding error

I have a client who is using gmail to host his work email account.

Unfortunately about once a week he gets the dreaded "imap.gmail.com" is not responding error.

The "fix" of deleting the account and re-adding it only fixes the issue for a week at most before the error returns.

Instead of using the sticky band fix, has anybody been able to track down the cause of the issue?

If not, what alternative, easy to use mail clients do you suggest (not the gmail app).

I have also been having this issue for the last 2 days on my iPhone 5 using ios 7.1. I turned off my phone yesterday for about 1 hour and when it came back on it Mail worked just fine but the next time I check the emails that had come in had disappeared and was back to getting the error message. My iPad Air also using ios 7.1 works fine. I have 5 gmail accounts coming into Mail, logging into all of them on my iPhone is a pain.

Can we get some help with this problem?

Thank you

Cindy
