My iMac has become very very slow. System info shows 1 go of ram in bank 0 and an empt bank 1. Is the ram defective or something else?

What OS X are you running?

It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.

If you so choose, please download, install and run Etrecheck.

Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic reporting tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.

Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.

This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.

It looks like my iMac came with only 1 gig of ram and that it started running very slow as more and more data was added. I found out that there was only one stick of 1 gig ram in my computer. I installed it in the second slot and the computer recognized it. The ram is OK. I don't understand how my iMac was able to run Snow Leopard at an acceptable speed for several years. I just ordered 4 gigs of ram.

Thanks for the support and sorry for the inconvenience.

That is correct. The Mid 2007 only came with 1 1GB module.

Snow Leopard is pretty tame. It will run OK on 1GB of RAM, as long as you have plenty of free space on your Hard Drive. Sounds like maybe your Hard Drive is getting full and Snow Leopard is struggling to find enough free space to easily swap files in.

No problem. We are all here to share, help and learn. 😉
