I have a Mac MINI conected to a Phillips monitor. When the connection is done with a VGA cable and a separate cable for sound into the monitor 'line in' jack, everything works alright, however when the conenction is made using a HDMI cable, no sound comes out. However when using a program called VLC for video reproduction, it works! I've tried sound preferences and when I try to select PHILLIPS HDMI for output options it just doesnt let me. Any ideas?

Thank you very much, it helped, I now have sound from the monitor speakers, BUT, the volume keys on the keyboard don't work anymore and the volume icon on the top of the screen and the volume indicator that appears when the volume keys are pressed are now greyed... Ill keep trying
The reason why the volume indicator and the up and down volume keys are greyed out is because the sound is controlled by the HDMI device namely your monitor. Your monitor remote(if it has one) will control the volume or the volume button on the monitor.
Oddly enough it works with windows. I run boothcamp on this computer and when I log in to windows 7 the volume keys work as they should...
