Mbp/Mavericks suddenly hangs/freezes

Hi all,

I have an early 2011 13" mbp (Intel Core i5) with 8G RAM and a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive (750G), which until yesterday has been running like a dream. Never freezes or hangs, Photoshop, statistical packages, and other big apps load immediately, and rebooting takes 20 seconds or so. I love it.

Of note, I added Windows 8 on a bootcamp partition a few weeks ago.

Yesterday I took it to the Genius Bar to get a key replaced (kept popping off). When I got home and restarted, I started having problems. About 30-60 seconds after a reboot, I get the beach ball of death for 1-2 minutes. (I can use the computer normally until it starts). Then randomly during use (maybe every 5-20 minutes, or sometimes less), it will do the same thing- become unresponsive and give me the beach ball- and then it un-freezes.

Here's what I've tried:

- removing startup items (only Google Drive, but note: Junos Pulse starts automatically and can't be removed from startup)

- Verify disk (in normal mode and safe mode)

- Verify/repair permissions (normal and safe mode)

- Apple Hardware Test via internet (regular and extended testing)

- Resetting the PRAM

- Checking for updates

- Checking for HDD firmware updates

Any ideas? It's getting frustrating.

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I've heard that Google drive causes some problems for Mavericks users, but I don't use it myself so can't verify that.

Thanks for the reply. I have disabled Google drive, and I close Junos as soon as it opens (thanks for the link- unfortunately, I have to keep it on my computer, but it'd be nice if I could keep it from running at startup!). Despite neither of the programs running, I still get occasional hangs ("occasional" meaning every 15-20 minutes or less), and always a bigger one after startup.

Any ideas?

No MacKeeper or Norton. I booted to recovery and ran the disk utility. Here's my Etrecheck log:

Overall symptoms make it look like something's eating up memory, but the activity monitor doesn't show anything strange (Safari's taking up 90-115% CPU, but I'm not sure if that's normal or not, and I get these symptoms even without Safari running).

The applications folder takes a second to show icons, which is also new. The regular hangs with the beach ball are killing me. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Try getting rid of the Seagate software. I'm not sure what the other kernel extensions here are, but I know the drive software can cause issues.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
