iPhone Apple logo to black screen

Last night my phone randomly became unresponsive to clicking the home or power buttons and was stuck at a black screen. I had another phone call me and my phone actually rang and vibrated, but the screen was still black. Then I looked up what the problem was and saw that I needed to reset my phone by holding the power and home buttons for a while. After doing this I saw the apple logo appear and thought it was fixed, but it is not.

Now the phone will just stay at the apple logo screen for a while, then the apple logo will disappear (but the screen is still slightly backlit), then it will go back to the apple logo a short time later. I let my phone do this until it finally ran out of power but when I plugged it in and charged it, it just kept on doing the same thing. I also tried putting my phone into DFU mode: by holding the power and home buttons for a while until the screen went black then releasing the power button but continuing to hold the home button. However after doing this and plugging my phone into my computer it did not recognize it and my phone just went back into the same old cycle. I just want a working phone back so someone please help me! I don't care if I have to restore it.

In addition to force restarting and DFU mode restore, there are still other solutions for fixing iPhone stuck on Apple logo:

  1. Press and hold the Power and Home buttons till the screen is black, press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons until Apple logo reappears, and then release the Power button but keep holding the Volume Up button till you see the lock screen.
  2. Restore or update the iPhone in recovery mode. If you see any error codes iTunes, you can find the exact issue in the article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204770
  3. Use a third-party software to reinstall the iOS without restoring.

Thanks for the question. I can understand how frustrating this situation may be. To completely isolate this to a hardware issue, it would be best to follow each step in this resource:


iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

Resolution


1. If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.


2. If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.


3. If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.


4. If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:

1. If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.

2. Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.

3. If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.

4. If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.


5. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:

1. Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.

2. If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.

3. If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.


6. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.

The types of issues you mention don't actually have much, if anything, to do with the iPhone itself. Those types of issues are software related, which generally means one of a few things.


It could mean that some piece of software you installed on the device is not cooperating with a piece of already installed software, or a part of the Operating System.


It could also happen due to the device running out of RAM (essentially the memory that controls all the currently ongoing functions of your device.


If you want to avoid these types of problems there are a few things you can do:

  1. Close out of applications when you are done using them. The iPhone is just like a computer in this way. When you press the home button and go back to the Home Screen from inside an app, that doesn't actually close the app. It puts the app in a "pause" type state, but the app is still using some amount of memory.   2. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off. Or at least only leave it on for the most essential apps.
  3. Turn your phone off every now and then. You shouldn't need to do this often, but like any other device it does benefit from being turned off for 5-10 minutes once every week or so.
  4. Uninstall unused apps. We all have them, those games or random utility apps that we download and use once then never touch again. Games that we played years ago but the developer abandoned and haven't updated. Getting rid of these kind of apps can help tremendously in making sure that your device runs smoothly.
  5. If all else fails, use a computer to restore to factory settings and set up as new. Only sync over the necessities and I guarantee your phone will feel amazing.

Hi matt00

I'm having the same issue now with my iPhone 5c at this very moment. I waited for the battery to completely drain, connected the iPhone to the computer and the apple logo is on and just waiting and hoping it works. The provider won't exchange it because its out of warranty and I don't have AppleCare coverage

I will be seeing someone at apple Saturday to address that its Apple hardware defect and nobody wants to help.😠

If that doesn't work, try putting your device in recovery mode this way:


Plug the device into the computer and hold down both the sleep/wake and home button together until the iTunes logo appears on the phone.


Sometimes when your device is in a reboot loop this is the best way to put it into recovery mode.


Normal Recovery Mode Steps:



1: Disconnect all cables from your device.



2: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button, then "slide to power off" to turn off your device.

2(alt): If the device is unresponsive you may need to power down the device by holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button together and then release them immediately when the screen goes black.



3: Ensure that the device is fully powered down



4: Press and hold the Home button and plug the device into your computer. If your device doesn't turn on automatically, turn it on. Don't release the Home button.



5: Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.



6: If iTunes doesn't open automatically, open it. iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode.



7: Click the "Restore" Button. Then click "Restore & Update"

Have you already tried different USB cables/ports?


If you are using a desktop computer I strongly recommend using a USB port on the back of the computer. The front ports are often lower powered and see more issues.


If you have already tried known-good USB ports and cables, it's likely a hardware issue with your iPhone. I'd still try a restore on a different computer just to be 100% positive though.

I think that, that sort of problem should NOT happen since the iPhone products are so expensive, i got my iPhone 5c 8 months ago, and it's starting to go blank for absolutely no reason. My phone is not even a year old ! It's unacceptable that we can't see any effective solutions on here but when you go on youtube you can found dozen of solutions. But what think is really bad coming from the famous Apple products is that they are so unresponsive. I should have found the solution to my problem on here because it's a site for Apple products but all their concentration goes on advertisements. I am not very interested on your new iPhone 6 ! I'm interested on how to make my phone work again. I'm going to the apple store today and if they don't have any solution i'll have to buy another phone so at the end of the day my money went to the dustbin. I though that the Apple products were awesome being a kid, because you can download games, but now that i'm a teen and that i really need my phone, i can see how useless and unresponsive the Apple products may be. I was at school the first time my phone when blank, i finished earlier that day and i needed to call my dad so he can come and get me, but oops my phone when blank i couldn't to anything about it! If my school wasn't a private school i don't know what could have happened to me. Thanks to the school security i finally called my dad. What do you think about it ? Is this acceptable ? I don't.

Unfortunately, most of your "advice" is wrong. Especially 1, 2, 3, and 4. And none of them deal with the real issue.

2. This is partially useful, but has nothing to do with the OP's problem.

3. Nonsense. There is no benefit to this, and again, it has nothing to do with the OP's problem.

4. Deleting apps you don't use provides no benefit at all, other than to free up storage if you are short. If they aren't being used they won't do any harm. I have 280 apps on my iPhone, and use about 20 regularly. The rest just sit there, doing nothing and doing no harm.

IF you ever go through the logs of someone's device that is experiencing these issues,you will be very likely to find one of the situations mentioned previously
