migration assistant crashes back to login screen

Old macbook 10.6.8

new macbook pro 10.9


direct connected via ethernet cable


two systems connect when the validation code displays and the new macbook says "looking for files to transfer" for about 15 seconds, then it stops and go back to the login screen on the new macbook.


the old macbook then says attempting to connect.


ran disk utility to repair permissions on the new macbook, but no success. It keeps crashing.


suggestions???

I am having the same problem, although it is the older mac that is crashing.


The article you supply is great for beginners (plug in power, run updates, etc.), but doesn't address the root problem (crashing). Assuming the suggestions in the article are followed and one of the machines still crashes, what next?
