Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

when you enter it, did you use the hotmail preset or the outlook one?

Mine was working, then not, then I had to delete and re-add it as outlook.

This is what happened to me. I added two step verification and then since then it didn't work. I've just got my working with it still on. All you have to do is go onto your hotmail account on safari (PC site) and go on security and password. click on app passwords. Take note of the password and then go on your iphone to add a outlook account. Type in your email and then instead of typing your normal password in, put in the app password you've just wrote down. I've spent ages trying to get mine to work to which this worked straight away. Good luck

I also had a problem with my Hotmail on the iPhone 5c and found out it couldn't verify server because I had to step verification process on the account go in disable it and reload again
