Crashing EVERY DAY since installing Maverick

OK, I give up and I need help.

My MBP NEVER crashed. Then I installed Maverick. Now, I have multiple crashes every day. Actually, I had to write this twice because my computer CRASHED in the middle of writing it!

I removed all 3rd party software, still crashes. Reinstalled Maverick, still crashes. Stopped pluging in my iphone to charge, still crashes. Deleted all music and videos, still crashes.

Checked my RAM and HD for issues, including viruses. None found.

I can't run iMovie or Garage Band for more than 3 minutes without by computer crashing. And it ONLY seems to crash when I have Apple software up, especially Mail amd Messages.

Here's my computer info:

15-inch, Mid 2010

Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)

Here's my latest crash report. I'm one more crash away from wiping my drive and staring over. REALLY don't want to. Please help 😟

The_Joan,

some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect.

I had a feeling it may have been a hardware issue, but I bought this computer Refurbished online FROM The Apple Store in mid 2012. I'm assuming that's something they would have checked for?

Also I've done some pretty involved Video editing and illustrating on this computer with Mountain Lion with absolutely no issues.

If I have Adobe Illustrator or After Effects running with nothing else, it's fine. I've gone 6 hours without a crash. But if I have ONLY Mac Mail up, it can't handle it for more than 30-60 minutes. I even tried using Opera Mail and Thunderbird and it still crashes when only that application is open.

Is there a way for me to diagnose my graphics card on my own? The Apple Store here is a nightmare. Or got a second guess?

But FABULOUS answer, I had no idea it could have been defect. THANK YOU!

Apr 2, 2014 10:43 AM in response to The_Joan

I just wanted to jump in and support what Melophage said. I have the same model MBP that you do and had the same problem. And yes... it's extremely annoying. I was lucky enough to have it occur while I still had 5 days left on my 3 year warranty, so the repair wasn't an issue at all. Only the Apple store can run that particular VST test, it's something they keep for themselves. But the GPU panic that you see in your crash report is indicative of the problem.

The card is part of the motherboard, so it can't be replaced by itself. There was a program in place to replace these defective machines from 3 years from the date of purchase, but most people are outside that window now. In your case it should be no issue at all to get it serviced.

The_Joan,

I don’t know what checks Apple performs on the refurbished models which it sells, so I don’t know whether they would check for this defect or not.

To my knowledge there isn’t third-party software that would detect the defect; if you manage to find such an app, you should include the relevant information about it in a reply here, so that others reading this discussion who have the same model would be able to test theirs for the defect too.

It would be best to confirm the presence or the absence of the defect first, since if the defect is present, making and testing second guesses would be a waste of time. Since the Video System Test is part of the standard Apple store repetoire, making an appointment to have them run it would hopefully avoid most of any associated nightmare (apart from getting an estimate for the repair if the defect is present).

Apr 2, 2014 10:49 AM in response to Melophage

Just to add a little more. (I take particular interest in these since I had this issue myself)

Melophage, my understanding is they don't necessarily run that specific test as part of diagnostics though I'm not sure. I walked in with a hard copy of my panic report, so they immediately did it. The repair for me was 3 days. I left it on a Monday and had it back on Thursday. Hopefully Joan won't have any issues as the bulletin was for 3 years from the date of purchase and she bought it from Apple as a refurb in 2012.

Apr 2, 2014 11:01 AM in response to BobRz

BobRz,

that’s why I’d thought that specifically asking for the VST might help to have it done.

The_Joan,

following BobRz’s example in printing out a GPU panic report is an excellent idea, if you think that your local Apple store would be reticent to run the Video System Test simply on your request. Do you still have the original proof of purchase for your MacBook Pro? If so, bring that along as well; if they say that the defect is present, present the proof of purchase to them so that they’ll know that you’re within the three-year window — the repair would be gratis. Some people have reported that replacement logic boards have also exhibited the same defect, so keep that proof of purchase in case you need to make use of it again before its three-year anniversary.

****. Really wish I would have waited for you guys to reply before I wiped my drive.......

I was convinced it was a software issue, since I did every diagnostic test I trusted. My older brother was an apple tech a few years back so he told me what to run. And they found nothing wrong. I was fed up so I 0'd out my drive last night and reinstalled this morning. And sure enough! Had mail open for 10 minutes before it crashed.

So you're right, it has to be a hardware problem. And I never learned how to read the crash reports, but now that you guys point out the GPU Panic and the very next line there's AppleGraphicsControl.

Ugh. Now I have a fabulous trip to make to the Apple store to get ignored for half an hour before I get to speak to a Genius who will refuse to believe I know what I'm talking about!! Yippee!!

It may take me a while to do it, since I work from home and have a very small window of when I can be without my computer, crashes or not. But I promise I'll come back and let you guys know what happened.

In the meantime, if anyone has a workaround, PLEASE let me know!

Much love to the forum, I've never posted before and I'm happy to find people who are willing to share their knowledge 🙂

Some samples of MacBook Pro 6,2 (2010) were built with Graphics chips with a Latent Defect. These parts had problems from the day they were made, but the problems did not make themselves known until later versions of Mac OS X made them more obvious.

The program that checks for this is described in TS4088:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

The standard overnight looping diagnostics have never found this problem. Instead, a different test called the Video Swiching Test (VST) can tell in a few minutes, and ends in a full-screen PASSED or FAILED display. It is reasonable to ask them to run VST while you watch and wait.

For almost all users, the time limit on this program has expired.

If your MacBook FAILS, you need to REPLACE the graphics chip. Re-soldering alone will not fix this problem.

a) Apple charges about US$700 to replace the motherboard with the chip on it in the Store, typically overnight to two days if parts are available.

--------

b) IF and Only IF -- the Store Manager will authorize Depot Repair for you, you can get it repaired in about a week for under US$350.

--------

c) A qualified third-party surface-mount device fixer may be able to REPLACE THE CHIP [again, re-soldering is NOT sufficient to fix the problem] and re-solder for about US$200 more or less.

Note that only the VST Test is known to detect the latent defect, so do not depend on the re-solderer to detect the problem -- they will NOT detect the problem, and you will be out the money without a fix unless you request Chip Replacement up front.

Apr 2, 2014 11:05 AM in response to Melophage

I'm looking for my proof of purchase now, I've dealt with this store before and they like to send people home to get stuff they can look up but don't feel like it.

Is this something that an autherized dealer would do? There's a place here (Tucson, AZ) Called Simutek that has amazing service and they're SO quick. They did a 48 hour repair in 4 hours for me before because I had a deadline.

Plus I'm a girl and I walked into the store crying..... That seemed to help..... 😝

Apr 2, 2014 11:09 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Well, Grant Bennet-Alder, your answer is absolutely terrifying.

But at least I have a better idea of what I could be looking at money wise. I have some extra cash, but $700 is way out of my range. It's really good to know I have other options.

I was really hoping for FREE because this ISN'T MY FAULT!!!!! It's a little frustrating knowing I have to shell out anything when if it's such a simple test, it should have been run as part of the "Full Diagnostics" Apple promises on their refurbished machines.
