Mid 2012 Ret MBP 15" GPUPanic.cpp Crahses + Missing NVidia GPU in Report

Hi,

I am the next with the GPUPanic.cpp crashes on his MacBookPro10,1.

Surpisingly I also found that my NVidia card doesn't show up in the System Report anymore:

User uploaded file

Anyone else seen that?

I am out of official Apple warranty but have an extended plan with the shop I purchased it from. Is there any official statement from Apple support regarding this issue? Problem started about two days ago and I had several crashes...

Thanks,

Daniel

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I'm having the same problem on my 2012 rMBP, and so are a lot of other folks. Only the Intel GPU appearing in System Report and tons of black screen panics. For me the issue started right after a seemingly uneventful software update to 10.9.2.

Now, when I reinstall OSX, the discrete will sometimes show up in System Report for an hour or so, but the computer still acts up. And getting the machine to boot requires multiple attempts every time. I've wasted 15-20 hours trying to solve this problem, no joy as of yet.

Genius bar appointment tomorrow, will post result.

Hi Linc,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately my RetMBP is out of official warranty but I have a 36month plan with the shop in Germany, where I bought it. Unfortunately I live in Japan now and have to send it to them. I sent them an E-Mail about the issue, quoting several forum threads with people having the same issue. I was just wondering if there is anything official from Apple about this issue, as you might know, a lot of shops simple turn the device on and off and if that works it's not broken... Before sending it to Germany and being without any proper Computer I want to make sure, that they get my problem and fix it, before they send it back... :-/

Thanks,

Daniel

Took my rMBP to the Genius Bar yesterday. They tried some stuff to fix it, but couldn't get it working normally either. After taking it in the back, the tech decided it needs a new logic board.

Like yours, KLOSK, my rMBP is also out of the warranty period. However, about 10 months back, my screen started flickering and getting grey lines going black. Apple replaced the logic board it under warranty and it's been fine up until this. Unfortunately, Apple's warranty on repairs is only 90 days, IIRC.

So Apple would was under no real obligation to cut me any slack. However, the tech simply apologized for the issue I was having and authorized a depot repair, totally free of charge. I am completely satisfied with that resolution. Unlike the my past Mac's, this retina thing has been pretty dang unreliable for me. Repairing it on their dime was only right, IMO.

I have to say, in the 9 years since I bought my first Mac, the Geniuses at my local Apple store have never failed to do the right thing when I have had issues with any of my devices. That's not to say I haven't paid for a number repairs out-of-pocket. But they have always been very reasonable in determining what remedy, if any, Apple should provide.

I've never used Apple's phone support, but I hope they do you right. Good luck.

Apr 4, 2014 2:23 AM in response to what?

Man, that's great! Unfortunately here in Japan, the closest Genius Bar is 350km away (which equals to about 6 hours of driving one way :-/)

Surpisingly after everything went black on my screen I ran an NV and PRam Reset and the screen worked again. Everything fine so far for a day and a half now... The Apple chat support was very nice, but of course also couldn't help me besides saying I should got to the Genius Bar...

I guess I'll wait until the problem shows up again and then send it to Germany...

Apr 17, 2014 6:52 PM in response to seb2

I don't think it will work. It fixes the problem temporarily but it will come up again. I've noticed once the Nvidia card is out of the system it works reliably for a while. Until you reboot.

I am now certain the Nvidia is broken as , when it's on the system crashes and when it doesn't show in the system report the sytem kind of works...

Can we please all who have that problem make Apple aware of it? Send the crash logs after reboot and contact Apple Chat Support and let them know!

Also you can refer to my Case with Apple - Even at the Genius Bar they can look this up. The sooner Apple realizes there is some problem with their Nvidia Batch (again (This was with their old MBP's http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377)) they will come up with a solution...

Thanks,

D

Aug 7, 2014 10:29 AM in response to kLOsk

Hi Guys.

kLOsk, I am in the same situation as you, the others in this post and others that I read in other posts and pages.

Also I am out of warranty, and I don't know if the Apple here in Brazil will be so kind as the others reports to replace even when the warranty is over.

My problem started with de GPU Panic, when using graphic applications like Photoshop or so, and then I did all the stuff already mentioned. Resting the SMC. After a while the panic was over, but then when reseting or closing the lid, I started with a black screen. I read reports about how to do a workaround, closing the lid and inserting a mini disply to hdmi and removing to restore de display. Also I notice that the Nvidia disapeard from de system report.

So what is my conclusion:

I think I am stucked with a Macbook pro Retina 15 (mid 2012) with a dead GPU Nvidia chip. I can work and do graphic stuff. but its so sad that I paied a lot of money (here in Brazil is too expensive, so I bought from someone who bring from USA. Also I forgot to buy the apple care.

Thats it. If someone discover something different, please share because I am preatty much convinced that is a situation with no solution. Even replacing the Logicboard, I've read reports that the problem returned after a few months.

Take care all of you.
