Volume goes up uncontrollably

My 4 year old iPod clasic just started getting uncontrollably louder. I turned down the volume manually and it quickly rose to maximum level. Then I reset the volume level internally and it still ries rapidly, 2 or 3 seconds, to the maximum level within the levels just set up. I lower the volume manually and it rises to the maximum level on its own automaically. Onset of problem was sudden.Any ideas?

My problem suddenly cleared up but after about 10 days it started again. To clarify, whether I try to listen on a dock or on headphones I can try to turn the wheel to decrease volume but it fights me and the volume (and the visible volume bar) take over control and push the volume as high as it can go. The device is not usable at these high levels. Can anyone help?
