Data repeated on mac

Whenever i download a movie i save it in a downlaods folder. If i have to sync it to my iDevice i have to copy it the iTunes library. By doing this my data is repeated i.e. it is in the iTunes library as well as in downloads. and so i run out of space. How can i fix it ?
