How to add text with solid background to a clip whilst keeping the original clips audio audio

Im editing a video and want to place text on a black background over the original clip so I can keep the clips audio, ive tried using the cutaway tool but it wont let me overlap the text with background just another clip fom my event libary, any suggestions?

FCPX little brother, iMovie v10 uses the same keyboard-shortcuts, so it allows this simple workflow:


select the range you like to replace by clicking on the start-point, wait a second,then drag the yellow selection to the out-point in your projects timeline to mark the section (or, use the keyboard-shortcuts I and O)

• select the Black-generator

type Q - abrv. for qnnected.. sorry, silly German humor…:

this will create a connected clip to the section you just had selected

• add Title to that
