Q: What is the role/purpose/function of iTunes in unlocking an iPhone

This may be outside the scope here but am at end of my tether..

My better half was given a present of an iPhone 4 which now appears to be not new but is locked to Vodafone in Ireland.

It is impossible to make any human to human contact with anyone in Vodafone Ireland, all they offer is the web.

From the link below

http://onlineforms.vodafone.ie/nac/

and then  on this one below

https://support.vodafone.ie/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1003&PAR TITION_ID=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTRY=ie&USERTYPE=1&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=null&CMD=VIEW_ARTI CLE&ARTICLE_ID=757183&SOURCE=null

Unlock your iPhone

The forms they ask you to fill out dont work with Safari, it seems they only work with IE as the browser.

My understand is that to unlock the phone  will need a SIM with the original phone number on it  inserted into the phone for the phone to connect to itunes to complete the process.
Hence to my question:
Whose iTunes account?
Is it the original owner?
Why iTunes?
Thanks for reading

    Whose iTunes account?

The iTunes account doesn't actually matter. The phone is identified by the IMEI not the iTunes account, as you can have more than one phone per iTunes account.

    Is it the original owner?

    No.

    Why iTunes?

Because iTunes performs tha actual unlock after talking to Apple's unlock database to check the phone should be unlocked.

Here are Apple's instructions for unlocking an iPhone:

That may make things more clear.

    Sorry for delay,

thanks to you both for this help, it worked fine based on the above.

What we did was got a friend with a vodafone account to call Vodafone Ireland and gave them the IMEI

It is nearly impossible to get a human

they then sent back a text to the fone of the friend  with the iTunes instruction.

There was no code or anything sent back, just the text message.

    Thanks again
