procedure to upgrade from OSX 10.6.2 to OSX 10.8.4

First run Software Update (from the Apple menu) to update your computer to 10.6.8. Once you get there, you will get another couple of sets of upgrades - you should download/install these until you see no further updates available.

10.8 can be downloaded from the App Store, which you'll get as a new application in your Dock with 10.6.8.

Before you attempt to purchase and install it, though, make sure:

- You have a full backup of your system;

- Your Mac can actually run 10.8 (many older models can't, including Mac Pro desktops 2006-2007)

- If you have third-party software (eg, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office, etc), make sure the versions you have can continue to work under 10.8. You may need to upgrade those apps too.

If you used Disk Utility to restore your system drive to another drive, then yes, that should suffice as a bootable backup. If you restored to a disk image, I would do a full restore to a drive instead.

Essentially, you want a bootable drive in case the upgrade fails and you can't boot from the original drive. Normally, the upgrades go very smoothly, but it's best to be on the safe side.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

• OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
• 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
• 8 GB or more of available space
