I'm interested in using powerpoint on ipad for conferences, rather than toting my laptop around. But the conferences that I go to usually have a computer attached to the video display, so I need to upload my presentation to that computer by thumbdrive. How can I get a ppt off my ipad to a usb thumbdrive if I don't have any other computer with me?
You don't. The iPad doesn't support the export of data to a flash drive.
There are some wifi drives out there - flash drives that have a built in wifi hotspot and you 'beam' your data to it from your iPad. They're not common and not cheap but the closest to what you want. (the WiDrive I think is one of them)
Or you can look for something like dropbox, where you upload your presentation to the service then download it to another computer where you can get it onto a flash drive.
Alternatively, purchase the Lioghtning to hdmi adapter and do the presentations direct from keynote or Microsoft powerpoint on your ipad.
I use dropbox all the time to transfer files to/from my ipad, and powerpoint on ipad only allows editting if you have an office 365 subscription, which means 20gb on MS onedrive. But I don't think I can get access to either on computers at the conferences I go to, the way they are typically set up.
Do the flash/wifi drives really work, though? Is there an app for ipad that allows me to find and send a file from the ipad to the drive? That would be a solution although it's a little pricey, so I don't want to buy one before I know this really does the trick.
This isn't an option for me, unfortunately; I have to actually upload my presentation into the conference computer. Partly this is so all presentations are availableonline later, and partly the idea being that if everyone giving a talk connects and disconnects to the projector it would really slow things down.
The wifi drives work (I use Airstash SD, and Seagate Wireless Plus) but each has limitations and could be tricky to get the presentation computer connected to them as some isolate the network so it is the only one active, Many of my conferences that I present at have a coordinator that I can email my presentation to and they take care of loading all of the presentations into the local computer, (might be an option)
or have a look in the App store for "file server" and see if one of those apps would allow a connection between ipad and computer in one direction or the other. I use Documents by Readdle, FTP Sever andAir Disk and all work well.
With all frankness, as a person who is often the tech support at meetings, e-mailing ahead of time is the easiest. I know not for many presenters - who are often making their presentation on the way to the meeting, but, honestly for your means, a netbook may serve you better than an iPad since it offers a greater range of flexibility in file transfer.
the iPad, since it lacks a file manager program, depends on apps or the internet for file transfer. Which isn't' always something that's there and handy.
Yeah, well, e-mailing assumes that I have the talk done when I get to the meeting, or even that it's done, say, more than an hour before I'm scheduled to give it. 😝
And my ipad is my netbook -- I use it with a bluetooth keyboard to edit docs in Pages, and with Office I can do the same in Word (makes things easier for me now). I already have a laptop; I don't want three devices, I just am trying to see if I can get away with carrying just my ipad on conference trips.
Between you and Rob, I have some leads now on what devices to look for; I guess I may have to try to find someone or some store who has one so I can try it myself.
