Q: I updated Pages and now I can't open old pages docs! How do I retrieve that?

I updated all my iWork applications including Pages and now old docs in Pages won't open saying The required index.xml file is missing.

I have lost some irreplaceable docs.  How do I retrieve them?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The old iWork apps are still on your Mac and you can still use the old versions to still open your older iWork documents.

No, it won't open even with the old AP.  I can see it in its old form but when I click "open" I get the same message that the index.xml file is missing.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

The required index.xml file is missing.

Sometimes this is due to a corrupted file but lately it is due to users trying to open Pages 5 files with Pages '09.

When you update to Pages 5, the older Pages just gets moved.

All as I stated in my prior post.
