My macbook won't turn off. At all.

I literally cannot get my macbook pro (2012) to power off because it won't allow me to close an application. The program is not responding, yet is open, so it both won't let me open it or quit it or even delete it. I can't even power down by pressing the power button. I've tried everything and nothing works. I even let my battery die hoping it would shut down my computer, but it just went to sleep for a couple hours and resumed itself once plugged back in. I don't know how this can be remedied. Help.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
