How to return media to a brand new HDD

My Macbook Pro 13" unibody 2009's hardrive went 'phut', I did not have a usable back up, I have both an ipod classic and an ipad 2 with content on it, iTunes will only recognise the "Purchased" items and if I sync I will lose all the other books and music. Is there any way to access and control the files on both my ipod and ipad so I can retrieve all the patiently collected media and get it onto iTunes? Or, at the very least a way for me to manage the content without risking losing it through a sync?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1)
