G5 SONY DVD RW DW-U21A DVD-R Media Problem

hello all,

i have a G5 with a SONY DVD RW DW-U21A writer and its not possible for me now to burn DVD-R Discs.

I've tried following media which all doesn't work, not with toast 7.1, not with the Finders Burn utillity.

- blue TDK 1-16x (mediacode: TH002)
- verbatim certified 16x, printable (mediacode: MCC 03RG20)
- sony football edition, AccuCORE (mediacode: SONY16D1)

i spend over 130EUR to buy those media, only the old light blue TDK 1-8x media (mediacode: TTG02) which i've bought last year seems to work fine, but those media type is sold out.

but i have tried ALL those mediatypes on my G5 at work (pioneer DVR-106) and it worked!!!!!

i can't belive it!

i want a working DVD writer!

I've found it's the DVD-R 16x that are the problems for that Sony drive. 8x discs should work fine. Unfortunate but seemingly only fix.

It's odd that Thomas is having this problem with 8x discs. Maybe it's the discs themselves since you're the first person I've seen that has had a problem with 8x discs.

Ridata might not be the best quality.

hmmm, why it takes such long time to bring out a newer firmware?
i guess, it's not easy any more to get 8x dvd-r media.

so, i'll buy a pioneer dvr-111d burner which will cost about 38eur and will solve all my problems.

because the support told me that he will not change the drive until there is no hardware defect.

so long,...

My coworker and I are both having the same problem with the same dvd drive, on different computers, but we're on Panther 10.3.9. We got our Dual G5s together last March and were able to burn DVD-R discs fine until the past several months when they both started acting up. (CDs burn without a hitch.)

I've been searching the archives and it seems like it's been an ongoing problem since last year, not just with the Sony DVD model, but with Pioneer and others as well. Judging by all the various threads in the archive, I don't believe it's a media problem (I've tried using Verbatim certified 16x DVD-R), nor is it a optical cleaning problem. However, I haven't come across a solid ANSWER.

I tried burning from the finder and received the following messages:
- Burning the disc failed because this type of CD is not supported. (Error code 0x80020043)
- An error occurred while burning the disc. This disc cannot be used.

I tried burning on Toast Titanium 7 and got the following:
- Burning the disc failed because there was a problem with the disc drive. (Error code 0x80020023)
- Couldn't complete the last command because of a Mac OS error. Result code = -50

- I zapped the PRAM
- Repaired permissions thru Disk Utility
- Ran Apple Hardware Extended Test

Nothing worked.

I'm going to call Apple Care to see if they can shed any light.... But I somehow doubt it. Cross your fingers.

This answer is compliments of JMVP.
It's all Sony. Sony has added a fake 'bad sector' copy protection scheme to their DVD discs, which is known to cause problems with PC users, let alone Mac users. That's in addition to their copy-protection rootkit ficasio of recent months. If you Google "Sony DVD copy protection read problems", you have your choice of some 3,110,000 links to follow for more reading.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is I can tell you with a fair amoun of certainty that this is a firmware issue. The bad news is I don't know when Sony or Apple will update the firmware.

Like several folks in this post I work with the SONY DVD RW DW-U21A on a Dual G5 2.0

Manufacturer: SONY
Model: SONY DVD RW DW-U21A
Revision: AADB
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal

Everything was ok until I purchased some media: TDK 1X-16X DVD-R to be exact. I was having the same problems everyone describes. Thing is, I also have a LaCie d2 8X DL DVDRW that was also producing error messages with the new media. After searching for firmware updates yesterday and finding none, I was beginning to believe I had defective discs. Well today LaCie posted a firmware update which I downloaded and ran. Everything is fine with that drive now.
I couldn't find any firmware updates at Apple or Sony, but hope it's just a short time til they post. As an alternative, Newegg.com has 16X DVD writers (internal) in the range of $30-35. I will avoid Sony since their software support seems nonexistent. The other obvious work around is to buy lower speed media that your machine will get along with, if available.
To sum up, it seems that newer media may not run on older DVD burners without a firmware update. I don't recall any parallel in the evolution of CD media, but it appears to be the case here.

I hate to disagree, but it boils down to a Quality Issue with the Media you are using.
Maxell 16X DVD-R media is considered on of the best and in fact will burn on the older burners from 1X through and including 16X. Many of the media manufactures have a less than steller track record when it comes to the quality of there product.
The Maxell, brand in the individual jewel cases seem to be one of the best on the market right now. I try to stay clear of the 30-50-100 disc spools because of the poor quality issues.

hi all,

so finally i agree of the fact that this is really a firmware problem.

i have bought now a Pioneer DVR 111D burner, which only cost about 37EUR, and every media works now just fine (actually the exact media worked).

first the read-speed was very awful, but a hw-reset and patchburn has correct this,...

cio

please apple, update this firmware,..
