Iphone 5 keeps switching to silent on its own

My Iphone 5 is stuck on silent mode, or more accurately it keeps switching to silent on its own.

The problem started about 2 days ago, after upgrading to iOS 7.1 last week. The phone keeps switching in and out of silent mode (without the button being touched) and mostly stays in silent. It's not a speaker problem, nor a settings problem, as I’ve checked every bit of online advice I could find. I tried restarting, resetting, restoring, cleaning the headphone jack, and nothing helps.

An attempt to see if it’s a headphone related issue (by plugging and unplugging while restarting in various combinations) got it working fine for about 5 minutes, then it switched back to silent.

Needless to say, the phone did not suffer from any physical damage prior to the problem.

If the mute switch isn't functioning, you should make appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider and have it evaluated.

I accidentally voted for HELPFUL. I tried this after last update, and it worked, but with latest update it has not helped. Very frustrating. And the only way I can get it to ring for incoming calls is to select ANNOUNCE CALLS. But usually changing such settings only helps temporarily. Vibrate works but most often I am missing all incoming communication sounds. Very disappoined with Apple. iPhone 5.

if you have tools and the cablet then you can do it yourself. (and when I say tools phillips screw driver, star shaped screw driver for the bottom of the iphone, a suction cap to open the phone and some plastic spudgers.)

go ifixit to see how, it might be under volume or power flex cable or volume or power button as they are same part.

Once you open the phone, just disconnect the old cable then put the new one without taking off anything else then connect the screen and turn the phone on to make sure it is the cable.

If it is then change it with ifixit guide. If not check the schematic to see any missing or damaged part on the logicboard and the connector.

Well, folks, Apple screwed us all. I begain noticing the same problem. If you go to Settings, Do Not Disturb, and look at the last options (silent), you have ONLY two choices: Silent ALL THE TIME; or Silent when on lock screen. I was ready to throw my iPhone through the window because of this issue until I realized that Apple planned it this way. This infuriated me. I think I should decide when I want my phone on silent, not Apple.

I have the identical problem, and it started when I upgraded as well.

Trips to the AT&T store, and to Apple twice have not been able to solve. (Other than telling me for $300 they would replace it since my phone is 6 months past the 1 year warranty) All the resetting, wiping, even restoring to factory defaults using iTunes from the computer have failed. I finally had a tech open it and look at it, and it's pristine.

I've suspected software since the problem started occurring, because it is so random, and the fact that the speaker, mic, headphone, etc... all work fine.

Just while it's sitting on the desk, it will jump back and forth from silent to ring mode, but mostly stays in silent.

I'm convinced this is a bug

Thanks for the reply.

As I said, I've already tried restarting, resetting, and restoring.

About the volume flex cable - is this a repair I can do on my own, or should a lab do it?

No, you should not do it yourself. You should make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or at your local authorized Apple Service Center.

You appear to not understand the settings. Silent all the time or silent when on lock screen ONLY apply if you have DND enabled. They have no effect whatsoever if DND is turned off.
