iphone 5 dropping calls, failed sent messages, no 3G or LTE just 1x

I have an verizon iphone 5. For about a week now I have had nothing but dropped calls and failed sent msg. I see I have one bar (dot) and it says 1x. No 3G or LTE. My wife has a 4S and id sitting next to me and she has 3 bars (dots) and 3G. ??? HELP? It was working fine until about a week ago as I said. I already reset the network settings, rebooted, erased the phone completely and did a restore, nothing is helping. I see that I can't do *228 like my old verizon phones to update service.
