Is there a Manual Update Installer for Safari 7.0.3? I have a slow (0.5Mbps) ADSL line and two computers running Mavericks 10.9.2 and don't want to download it twice.

Unfortunately, no.

Hopefully you will be able to upgrade your internet service because with both Macs running Mavericks, at some point you may need to repair the startup disk or restore OS X, and that requires a broadband high spped internet connection as noted here.

The Safari 7.0.3 update is only 50 MB's.

Even with your current ADSL connection, you should be able to download the Safari 7.0.3 update.

Update URL's can be found from the Software Update catalog at

https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

which you can easily read in TextEdit.

Note that the packages listed will not usually make any checks before installing, so it's important that you pick the right one.

Dear Carolyn,

Thank you for your quick and informative reply. I feared this was the case. There will be no ADSL upgrade in our village until 2016, and then only 2 Mbps is promised to the 50 homes, 3 farms and 5 businesses. Nor do we have 4G mobile or even 3G. I shall have to consider satellite which is still slow and costs a fortune.

I downloaded Safari 7.0.3 this afternoon, which took over two hours. I shall now have to download it into the other Mac.

I think Apple are very unhelpful in not making Manual Update installers available. I recently upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2, which took 30 hours on each computer. There were some interruptions and even a short power cut, but the downloads would always resume from where they stopped.

Apple don't even explain how many Mbytes an upgrade is, so to start downloading one is a leap in the dark.

Thanks again

Peter

Dear Andy,

Your first link worked nicely and has started to download a Manual Install update, which I shall use for the second Mac. But I wonder where you found it, and how I can find other Manual Install updates in future.

I could not get the second link to do anything other than to open the App store, which correctly tells me that I now need no updates.

Kind regards,

Peter

Dear Andy,

Thank you very much. I've learnt something today!

So whenever there's an Apple update I download that catalog using Option-Return in the URL line, and open it with TextEdit. I then search for the string that contains "Safari7.0.3Mavericks.pkg" or whatever the upgrade might be (and more recent ones will be at the foot of the catalog): copy the section beginning http:// and ending in .pkg

I'll try that another time. I take the point about not trying to install the wrong package, but presumably there is always a "Read Me" section that explains the application and OS to which the update applies.

Cheers,

Peter
