I'm trying to figure out as there is a lot talked about regarding managed vs. referenced but I haven't found anything related to my question yet....

You can use an external drive to store referenced original image files instead of storing them inside the Aperture library, yes. This distinction is made, when you import images to Aperture.
To store the originals referenced, change the Import settings in the "Aperture Library" brick:
Set "Store filse" to a folder on your external drive.
To move already imported originals there too, use the command "File > Relocate files".

I'm not sure if my question was answered or not...it sounds like, Léonie, you are saying I can set up my external drive for referenced images which I already do. I'm actually talking about whether it is possible to set it up that my masters are on the external drive and using that drive as my managed library even though it is not inside Aperture itself. If I miss understood you, I do apologize.

yes, you can work from an external aperture library with managed photographs.
for example, the aperture application remains in your application folder but the "aperture library" will live on an external hard drive. aperture will then access/link to the external library when you open & import via aperture.
follow léonie's example.
aperture "the application" & aperture "the library" are two separate entities but linked together

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. You can keep managed Aperture libraries on any drive that is directly connected to your mac and formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled), see: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library. Simply drag your Aperture library to that drive and then double click it to open it in Aperture.
