And according to Apple also the newest TB2 0.5m cables " Thunderbolt 2 technology can bond the two channels for a superfast 20Gb/s" and the cable costs $29. Some felt it was worth the extra cost and elminated some problems.

The capability of bonding two channels is coming from the Falcon Ridge Thunderbolt controller, not the cable. You can achieve the same with Gen 1 cable as long as you use Thunderbolt2 controller on both ends.

According to following article, there's no difference between 1 and 2.
Thunderbolt 2 cables consume significantly less power than Thunderbolt 1 cables. This is significant if you are trying to use a Bus Powered Thunderbolt device.
