how to i verify that an email requesting that I verify if I recently made a purchase,

Hello Christine,

Report it to Apple as phishing. Then delete it. I think it is a potential scam.

And report it.

Apple will send you a receipt when you make a purchase. Apple will not send an email to verify a purchase.
