I have a friend who tells me that his data plan doesn't support receiving multimedia messages. He gets notified when I text him but he can't read the message, so he calls me. I know I can disable mms entirely but I don't want to do that. Is there a way I can exempt his contact from mms so that I only send him plain text messages by default?

Sorry no. you would need to turn off MMS each time you want to send him a text.

No, you have to temporary switch MMS OFF with him then switch back on when finished.
MMS is sent if a message is over 160 characters or contains audio, video, photo.
If is doesn't, it is sent as SMS.
