That's it. I don't want to activate the silent switch, because that disables all the sounds in my phone. I'd like to disable just the calling and SMS ringtones. Is there a way to do so?

You can set you're ringtone to "Silent"
Put it in airplane mode.
Where is supposedly that option? I double checked the list of ringtones and there's no "silent" option.
I still want to receive the calls and text messages. I just don't want them to sound.
Go to Settings>Sounds>and set it to NONE.
Its not a ringtone. Go to Settings. It should be the first thing in the list
After turning airplane mode on you will need to switch WiFi back on.

For SMS:
Settings>Notifications>Messages>Alert Sound>None.
For ringtones, you need a silent ringtone, As there is no default one. Here's one already made for you:

@dilbert41 I was responding to the other user. Airplane mode is not what I'm looking for though. I STILL NEED TO RECEIVE CALLS AND SMS.
@wjosten I thought about an option like this before, but I was hoping there was a better way to do this from iOS, rather than going through the **** of iTunes sync. I guess it's not possible then?
Well, you need to get a silent ringtone on your phone, & the only way to do that is either sync it to your phone, or find one in the iTunes store & purchase such directly on your phone.
