Excuse my ignorance, but I've just ordered a Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 Plus 1TB Portable Hard Drive for doing Time machine system backups. Can anyone tell me whether this is the correct sort of hard drive for the job - i.e. will it work?

once your new drive has been formatted by Disk Utility to have the “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” filesystem, it should work as a Time Machine backup destination.
