Mac Sleep During File Transferring

I recently bought a bigger external hard drive. I was transferring files from my old hard drive to the new one. I must have closed my macbook by accident. When I opened up my macbook it seemed like it was still tranferring from where I left off, but slower now.

My questions are:

1. Does putting mac on sleep during file transfer affect the files?

2. Is what I did bad for my macbook and/or my external hard drives?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I just tried transferring a couple of gigs of photos onto an external hard drive. I just left my Macbook Pro (early 2013) unattended, and when I got back to it:

- every file transfer was cancelled

- it told me that my external usb device had been removed abruptly

Why the **** is this happening? Every windows machine I've ever used has been smart enough not to go to sleep in the middle of file transfers.
