Does anyone know what causes pictures to become corrupted when using Viewer? This is an intermittent fault. Occasionally a is replaced by bright colourrs on a white background.

Check your "View" menu if "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" is active. Or "Onscreen Proofing" with an unsuitable color profile.
You can toggle Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" on and off with ⌥⇧H (option-shift-H).

Are the originals corrupted, or only displaying currupted in the Viewer? When you export the original and view it in Preview, is it o.k.?

So the originals are o.k.? Can Aperture show the original o.k.? While viewing the image in the Viewer type the "M" key. This will toggle between original and version. You will see "Original Image" overlayed on the image.
If that looks o.k., try "Photos > New version from Original" or "Photos > Reprocess original".
If not, reimport the exported original and see, if Aperture now can process it correctly.
There may be a corruption of your Aperture library, causing some versions to be read incorrectly. If you have not done so recently, I'd run the Aperture library First Aid Tools:
Launch Aperture while holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘ and continue to hold down the keys firmly, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel. Select "Repair database" from the panel and let the repair run. That may take a very long time, sometimes hours for a large database, without any apparent progress, so let it run.
It is hard to tell from the problems you are seeing, what exactly is causing this. If you have plenty of free disk space on your system drive, formatted all drives correctly, all software updated to the latest versions, check this link, to see what you not yet tried: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
Sometimes these random image corruptions can indicate hardware trouble - a bad block on your drive or problem with the RAM. If you can exclude all software problems, run a disk check and check your RAM.
Typing "M" shows the same corrupt version.
"Photos > New version from Original" and "Photos > Reprocess original" gives me the same corruption.
Switching between "Use JPEG as original" and "Use RAW as original gives me the same corruption.
Reimporting the exported original as an ORF file (Olympus Raw Image file) is corrupt.
But...Reimporting the exported orignal as a JPEG file is OK and can be processed correctly!
I will now run the the first aid tools.
If you cannot process the reimported raw image, there may be a problem with your raw decode settings:
Have you tried to change your "Raw Fine Tuning settings" in the Adjustments?
Try, if removing your camera default or removing all raw fine tuning presets can help (from the menu behind the gears icon):
If that does not change anything, quit Aperture, remove this files from your user library, and restart the system:
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Raw Decode Presets.plist
You user library may still be hidden, as is the default in Mavericks: To open your hidden user library:

Then you have probably never saved your own camera presets. It is only necessary, if you do not like the Aperture defaults for your camera.

Have you tried, if the camera, your, card, your card reader could be causing this?
Do you have backups of the original image files directly from your card to compare? Or are the originals still on the card, so you could import again and compare?
It would help to be able to exclude the camera as the source of the trouble by making a few tests with a different card, reformatted in the camera.
I don't have the original images on the card anymore but I do have them on my iPad.
The currupt photos (about 50) are from a set I took in India. The process I used was to transfer the photos to the iPad each evening to make space on the card. I did some basic editing on the iPad but this was mainly to eliminate unwanted photos. None of the currupt files had been edited. On my return home I transferred the photos to my iMac
I'm now suspecting that it is this process that is the cause of the problem because I've never encountered it when transferring from camera to iMac. I will now try transferring the relevant files from the iPad to the iMac and see what I get.

When you edit raw files in iOS on the iPad or iPhone, it will not really develope the raw. The iOS devices cannot do raw processing. All edits are based on the embeddedJPEG, so you cannot see on the iPad if the raw files are working.
I hope your raw files will turn out ok, when you transfer them again.
