While restoring replacement iPad from cloud got hung up restarted and all back up was gone, is there any way to get back up info after that happened?

When going to my iCloud back up, there is only 18 gb of data previously there was 42 gb, so is there a back up to the back up tha twould have all of the missing info?
I have only restored from an iCloud backup once and I did that more as an experiment. I use iTunes on my Mac as I don't totally resist any cloud server. I was under the impression that there should be three backups from which you can restore when you attempt to do this and I would assume that they would be your last three backups.
Were you provide with such an option?
