Pages 5.2 won't open older docs

After upgrading Pages to v5.2, when I try to open older documents, I get this prompt: "you need a newer version of Pages to open this document" I've uninstalled all other versions of Pages, and reinstalled Pages v5.2 but still can't open my existing files.

Jerry,

Thank you for the offer but I can recreate the data.

I just couldn't understand why the update for a major piece of software wouldn't open earlier versions, and present me with a nonsensical instruction as well. This isn't my first rodeo but I don't think I've ever encountered such a problem. I assumed that the error was mine - that I had missed some obvious requirement.

Thank you for your offer of help and interest.

I had the same problem and got really perturbed.

Reinstalled "Pages 09" and used it to open the older files.

Now I run both versions and play tag trying to keep contact with my older archived record files.

It was bad enough not being able to open Appleworks files but not being able to work with files of

various versions of the same program is idiotic.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.

Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Apple has, however, exhibited a pattern of office package obsolescence since the eighties. This marsupialization of potential has resulted in islands of inoperable documents, unless exported into de facto document interchange formats such as Word .doc/.docx.

There are free products (LibreOffice comes to mind) that have far greater features and functionality than what Apple offers in iWork solutions. Though short on aesthetic appeal, LibreOffice acquits itself in the huge number of legacy Microsoft, and Mac WP document formats that it can open, and a 22 year history of progressively adapting to future MS Office compatibility.

I have LibreOffice installed and spend more time in it that I do in Pages ’09 and v5.2 that are also installed. I just got weary of feeling nailed to the proprietary Apple Office/WP tree.

I have the same issue as lucascool111. It isn't anything with the versions. I'm opening Pages 5.2 and it worked before with pages 5.0 and 5.1. The documents open on the iOS version. So, if you need to get a dccument and have an iPhone or iPad try that.

This seems to be a bug that I'm sure will be fixed. I'm going to go find a way to report to Apple.
