Is there a way to extend your macbook display to your iMac?

So I have a macbook (late 2012 13") that I use for school. My parents have an iMac that is a much larger display (27"). Is there any piece of software that I can use to extend my macbook display onto the imac but then return the imac to its normal state when im not using it? Any help would be great.
