When will Mavericks toggle between HDMI and headphones

I tried Mavericks for about 30 minutes, then reinstalled 10.6.8 when I discovered I could not toggle the audio output between HDMI and Headphones. I use a mini for my home theater setup and I leave a cable directly to my amp plugged into the headphone jack. 10.9.1 would not let me route audio out through my HDMI connection until I unplugged the cable from the headphone jack. This was unacceptable and THE reason I uninstalled Mavericks.

Is this available in 10.9.3 or am I staying on 10.6.8 for a while longer? Yes, I sent a note to Apple Feedback. I have downloaded Mountain Lion but as yet not installed it.

Looks like I am S.O.L.. I'll be staying on 10.6.8 on my home theater mini forever it looks like.

I have been using the app AudioSwitcher (available on the app store) on Mavericks to control my sound outputs and so far it has been working great. It lives in the menubar for easy switching.

Are you running Mavericks? If you have a cable plugged in the analog headphone jack, can you choose HDMI as the audio output without unplugging the cable from the headphone jack?

I will have to install 10.8 or 10.9 to test this app. And if it doesn't do what I want... I don't want to go through all that again. I sent a note to Apple Feedback. If Apple wants me on 10.9 they'll have to fix it.

The computer I am running Mavericks on is a mid 2012 MacBook Air. It does not have an HDMI port - so I can't verify that it will show as a switchable option, but it does route the audio output as directed to the avialable outputs in my system:

That seems terrible that I have to use a third party app to restore an OS function. I've read a few threads that mention this function disappeared in either 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion.. I'll just stick with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

I guess APPLE read my feedback complaints about this. This audio selection works in El Capitan like it did in Snow Leopard. I wish I known earlier - I would have updated sooner. I just gave El Capitan a trial run after Sierra was introduced.
