If none of that works, then what do I do?

None of that worked! Now what? Of course this is happening just days before my 1 yr warranty expires!!

Try using the Terminal to quit the application. If it was iPhoto the command would be:

killall iPhoto

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart.
