Open iPhoto. Make sure you have the current version (iPhoto > About iPhoto from iPhoto's menu should display version 9.5.1).
Go to iPhoto > Preferences from iPhoto's menu. Choose the "General" tab. Select "Connecting Camera Opens" = "iPhoto".
Yes on both points. I have version 9.5.1 installed and my preferences are set to Open Iphoto with "Connectiong Camera Opens"

I found that if I shut down some other programs I had open, the problem was solved and Iphoto show my camera and imported my photos just fine. I am upgrading the memory in my laptop to 4 mg so it will be able to handle more open programs in the future. Problem solved.
