You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Previous Pages 5 versions can not open Pages 5.2 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5.2 files can not be opened in previous Pages 5 versions.

Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Be sure that you are trying to open a document created with 5.2 with 5.2. You cannot open a document created with 5.1 with 5.0 (or Pages 09), or a document created created with 5.2 with 5.0 or 5.1 (or 09). Apple has created a big mess here. If you really cannot open a file created with 5.2 with Pages 5.2, then the mess is even bigger than I thought. There were multiple complaints about files not opening, data corruption, etc. with 5.0 and 5.1. I thought they had been (mostly) fixed with Pages 5.2. Maybe not. In any event, this program is not suitiable for serious work: it is a toy to make posters &c. The lack of bookarks and inter-dcoument hyperlinks is a huge liability for editing and revising long documents, as is the program's inability to display comments while editing or to print comments. And of course, the fact that you cannot create documents with facing pages (and alternating left/right margins, headers & footers) means that you can no longer use it for creating books. Pages 5.2 is a curiosity, not a tool.

Well, if you created a document with Pages 5.1 (or 5.01 or 5.0 or 09, but NOT Pages 08), you should be able to open it with 5.2. (Pages 5.x cannot open Pages 8 files.) If you can't, call Apple support. (Note that if the document was created with 09 and you used any of the many features in your template that 09 supported but that 5.2 does not, those features will be stripped out of the document.) If this is serious work and not just playing around, you might want to forgo Pages for Word: it's a bloated monstrosity, yes, but at least it works with its own files. And now that there is an iPad version, there aren't many arguments for Pages.

I am getting that same message. It is driving me crazy. I looked at what version of Pages I was running and it said 5.1. I look in the app store and it says we are up to 5.2. I check for updates and it said that my apps are all up to date. I tried uninstalling Pages. It still showed that it was installed. I ended up having to reinstall through time machine to get it back, but it still won't. I am getting the same message as Biseenscene.
